When The Happiest Place on Earth Enters its Spooky Era

A guide to Disneyland's not so spooky 2026 Halloween celebration

When The Happiest Place on Earth Enters its Spooky Era

There is something frightfully fitting about Disneyland and Halloween. Take a destination filled with castles, ghosts, villains, fantastic creatures and larger-than-life stories, add some glowing pumpkins, costumes, and just a spoonful of spooky- and Voila! Disneyland becomes a top Halloween destination! Festive enough for people who love the holiday, while remaining approachable for families who aren't looking to spend their vacation consoling terrified toddlers.

Welcome to Main Street, Pumpkin U.S.A.

The change is noticeable immediately after walking through the gates of Disneyland Park. Running from August 21 through October 31, the familiar storefronts of Main Street, U.S.A. are surrounded by autumn colors, Halloween decorations and pumpkins—lots of pumpkins.

Look closely, because Disney doesn't simply repeat the same decorations from one building to the next. Pumpkins tucked into windows and displayed above storefronts have different faces and personalities, turning a walk toward Sleeping Beauty Castle into something of a scavenger hunt. At the entrance to Main Street, the enormous Mickey Mouse pumpkin keeps watch over Town Square and has become an iconic image for Halloween Time at Disneyland.

Main Street is often treated as the route between the entrance and the attractions, but Halloween gives you a reason to slow down and explore it. Wander through the shops, look at the displays and pay attention to the details above eye level. If you're traveling with children, let them see how many different pumpkins they can find.

Then come back at night.

As the California sunshine fades, the orange decorations and glowing jack-o'-lanterns feel less like autumn décor and a little more like Halloween. It's still Disneyland—but the mood has changed.

Haunted Mansion Holiday

No Disneyland Halloween would be complete without a visit to the Haunted Mansion, but during Halloween Time, the mansion's 999 happy haunts welcome some unusual holiday guests.

Haunted Mansion Holiday brings together two Disney favorites as the classic attraction is transformed by Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. Jack Skellington takes over the mansion after discovering Christmas Town and deciding to create a holiday celebration of his own. Sally, Oogie Boogie and other residents of Halloween Town join him, filling the attraction with elaborate decorations, new scenes and a wonderfully strange combination of Halloween and Christmas.

One of the most impressive details is the mansion's annual gingerbread house. Each year, Disney's pastry team creates a new design for the ballroom scene, giving returning visitors something new to discover. Combined with the seasonal music, characters and storyline, Haunted Mansion Holiday becomes much more than the original attraction dressed up for October. It is a defining experience of Halloween Time at Disneyland.

Disneyland Gets a Little More Villainous

As evening arrives, Disneyland's cheerful autumn atmosphere takes on a slightly darker personality. Glowing pumpkins replace the bright colors of the afternoon, Sleeping Beauty’s Castle stands against the night sky, and characters who normally cause trouble in Disney stories suddenly seem right at home.

That atmosphere carries into Halloween Screams, Disneyland's Halloween nighttime spectacular. Disney villains take center stage as projections, music and special effects transform the park into a celebration of Disney's spookier side.

For families who enjoy Halloween but aren't necessarily looking for a genuinely frightening experience, this is part of what makes Disneyland such an appealing destination. The park can feel spooky without losing the fun and imagination that makes it the Happiest Place on Earth.

Haul-O-Ween and Monsters After Dark

Across the Esplanade, Disney California Adventure has an entirely different Halloween personality.

During Haul-O-Ween, Cars Land transforms Radiator Springs into a Halloween celebration specifically created for its automotive residents. Decorations made from tires, traffic cones and car parts fill the town, while the residents appear in elaborate “car-stumes” designed around their individual personalities.

Even the attractions join the celebration. Mater's Junkyard Jamboree becomes Mater's Graveyard JamBOOree, complete with Halloween-inspired music. After sunset, the neon signs of Radiator Springs illuminate Route 66 alongside the Halloween decorations, giving Cars Land an extra layer of color and personality.

And the thrills get a little wilder elsewhere in California Adventure.

Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! begins the day with its regular storyline, but later transforms into Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark. The story continues after the Guardians have escaped the Collector's Fortress, only to discover that Groot has been left behind and creatures are loose inside.

With a different storyline, music and lighting, guests can experience two unique versions of the attraction during the same day. It also gives older kids and thrill-seekers something a little more intense than the playful Halloween atmosphere found throughout much of the resort.

Plaza de la Familia

Halloween isn't the only tradition celebrated at Disneyland Resort during the fall.

At Plaza de la Familia in Disney California Adventure, the bright colors, music and traditions of Día de los Muertos create an experience centered on family, remembrance and honoring loved ones who have passed.

Disney and Pixar's Coco provides a familiar connection for many children, while colorful decorations, music and storytelling introduce families to traditions that go beyond the film. It feels distinctly different from the pumpkins and playful ghosts found elsewhere around the resort.

This is one of the things I especially appreciate about the season. A Disney vacation can certainly be about rides and characters, but travel also gives children opportunities to encounter cultures and traditions outside their own. Plaza de la Familia integrates a bit of that experience into a Disneyland vacation.

Oogie Boogie Bash

For families looking for an even bigger Halloween celebration, Oogie Boogie Bash – A Disney Halloween Party takes over Disney California Adventure on select nights during the season.

The separately ticketed event offers its own Halloween entertainment, characters and experiences, with Disney villains playing a particularly large role. Among the most distinctive features are the immersive treat trails, where guests move through themed environments featuring villains who interact and perform along the way.

The important thing to remember is that Oogie Boogie Bash requires its own ticket. On party nights, Disney California Adventure closes early to guests who do not have admission to the event.

Haley's Tip: If Oogie Boogie Bash is an important part of your vacation dream, include it in your planning from the very beginning rather than treating it as something to add later. The event can affect both your travel dates and how you divide your time between the two parks.

Has Disneyland Halloween Cast Its Spell on You?

Disneyland at Halloween offers a little something for everyone. Younger children can enjoy pumpkin-covered Main Street and the playful decorations of Haul-O-Ween, while older kids can brave Monsters After Dark. Nightmare Before Christmas fans get an entirely transformed Haunted Mansion, Plaza de la Familia adds cultural traditions and storytelling, and Oogie Boogie Bash can turn an evening at California Adventure into a Halloween celebration of its own.

If that sounds like your family's kind of getaway, I can help you make it happen. Whether you're planning an extensive getaway with multiple destinations or a budget-friendly family trip, we can create an experience that fits your family, your interests and the memories you want to make together.

Because although Halloween may provide the pumpkins, treats and costumes, what makes it special are the people with you.

And if Jack Skellington happens to come along?

Even better.

Dream. Pack. Go.
